What are you thankful for?

This time of year as we gather to give thanks with family and friends, I always think of our patients and families who will be spending Thanksgiving with us at Nationwide Childrens. How do you celebrate when you have a child in Critical Care or under-going chemotherapy? Although we do everything we can to get kids discharged over the holidays, we estimate 270-280 children will be inpatients this Thanksgiving. Hundreds more will be seen in our emergency department. Many of the hospitalized children are newborns in our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and children who are just too sick to be discharged – even for a brief period of time.

More than 1,000 staff will be at work on Thanksgiving. Care and research never take a holiday. Additionally, many special volunteers will be giving their time to make the day special with entertainment and activities for our patients and families. There will be traditional Thanksgiving dinner with all the trimmings.

Listen to what some of our patients are thankful for then let me know what you are thankful for? I’d love to hear from you. From our family to yours. Happy Thanksgiving.
