A Little Card Makes A Big Difference

I’m always looking for opportunities to take you behind the scenes and share the “little things” that matter at Nationwide Children’s. This week we share the new guest card system we just launched – because security is a big thing. One look at the news headlines demonstrates why this is such a serious issue for all of us. At the same time we want our campus to feel open and families to feel comfortable while they’re here.

Our Guest Card system launched with the opening of the new hospital and it’s a great improvement over our previous “parent stickers.”  Families admitted to the hospital are now issued a personal guest card keyed to their unit on the hospital. This card works only on their floor and families scan the card to both enter and exit the unit. This keeps all units closed to anyone other than patient families and also allows our security team to know where issued cards are at any time. Because we collect identification information and photographs with every card issued we can see the identity of anyone trying to use a card to enter an area where they aren’t supposed to be.

Within the first 41 days of the new hospital being opened, our team had 10,771 cards issued to visitors. Once families are discharged they can drop their key card at the front desk or locations throughout the hospital (just as you would when you check out of a hotel).

Families tell us they like the new system and the additional comfort of mind it provides. We welcome your feedback on the guest cards and any way we can enhance your experience at Nationwide Children’s. Everything does matter!
