A Kaleidoscope of Caring – The story behind the new glow at Nationwide Children’s

Have you driven by Nationwide Children’s at night since the new patient tower opened last month? If you have, you’ve probably noticed that the tower glows with a kaleidoscope of colors. Our patients actually power this nightly light show.

Here’s how it works. Each patient room is equipped with an LED headwall behind the bed that can glow a variety of colors – Green, Blue, Purple, Pink and they can even rotate. It works just like a giant, colored nightlight that warmly lights the entire room. Patients choose the color and they can change it whenever they want with the push of a button.

In designing our new patient rooms we wanted as many ways as possible for children and families to control their environment and personalize the space – everything from individual room thermostats and magnetic walls for artwork to the color of their room.

To our knowledge we’re the only hospital to offer this option to our patients. Our goal is to help the entire family deal with anxiety, avoid homesickness and to empower them with a sense of control – at a time when many things are out of their control and normal routine.

The headwall was a homerun with our patients and families when we were testing the room design prior to construction. It’s also great for the child’s hospital room as it’s easy-to-clean with no build-up of dust.

Most importantly the kids love it! Look for “lightshows” in the future as we celebrate the seasons and special occasions. I understand one family has already asked if they can purchase a headwall for their child’s room at home. Not yet – but we’ll keep you posted.
