Why is Nationwide Children’s Still Under Construction?
You probably read the headlines…”Nationwide Children’s just completed the largest pediatric expansion in US History.” So why then does it seem like the whole campus is still under construction? Great question! We are still underway with A LOT of construction – Why? The expansion transformed about 1/3 of our existing downtown campus – introducing wonderful new nature graphics, a bright and open feel, along with easy-to-follow wayfinding.
That leaves 2/3 of the remaining campus to bring up to the same standard. Because everything matters we want to make sure patients and families have the same great experience anywhere they are on campus – not just in the new buildings. We’re also carrying our main campus feel and theme to many of our off-site locations. That’s why we’ve launched a 3-year construction “backfill” effort. Every aspect of the campus is being updated, renovated and improved. So please be patient with us while we work to improve your patient experience. We’ll keep you informed throughout the process and you can always visit our website before your visit to confirm parking and directions.
Speaking of parking….one big change currently underway is the renovation of the Outpatient Care Drop Off Entrance – Many families come to campus for clinic visits and park in the 18th Street Garage. This entrance is currently under construction and will be completed by early December. The good news is that we’re removing all steps and ramps so children will have a flat ride in wheelchairs and wagons. The bad news…you just have to be patient with us for a few more weeks while we finish construction.
We have attendants at the garage entrance to help you with parking and wayfinding during construction.
One “behind the scenes” suggestion…Did you know we have a great new underground garage attached to the new hospital? This is the most convenient place to park for all your hospital visits unless you’re coming for a clinic appointment (then you should use the 18th street garage). This convenient lot always has spaces and it’s located just off the driveway into the new hospital. This link will take you to a map.
You may also notice road construction around the campus. The city is currently replacing the brick intersections and crosswalks on Livingston Avenue and Parsons Avenue. This will help pedestrians crossing the streets and should help slow traffic. Work is targeted for completion by December of 2012.
Next up after the holidays will be renovation of the space that was previously our main lobby. This area will now be referred to as the “crossroads” lobby and this image gives you a great sneak preview. Look for more animal friends to be spread throughout the campus. Please let me know if you have any questions you’d like to see addressed in the blog and we’ll do our best to bring you stories of the “little things” that really matter.
