Where do great Pediatricians Come From?
Occasionally, I’ll tell you about hot legislative advocacy issues that impact children and could use your support. This is one of those issues.
Did you know that pediatricians and pediatric specialists complete most of their education at Children’s Hospitals? Every year hundreds of medical students, residents and fellows come here to receive training. We teach general pediatricians as well as pediatric sub-specialists and surgeons.
Currently we receive Federal Funding to help underwrite some costs of this training. We just began receiving these funds in 1999 and they’ve really helped us grow the number of physicians we can train which means more well-trained pediatric specialists to care for all of our children.
The current authorization for that funding has now expired and Congress in Washington is deciding whether to continue or decrease the dollars available. Legislation to reauthorize this program for another five years has passed the House, but is currently stalled in the Senate. This legislation is called Children’s Hospital Graduate Medical Education Program (CHGME).
If you care about this issue and you have 60 seconds you can help get the funding reauthorized. If you’d like to send an automated message of support to your Senator and ask them to help get this legislation passed just click here. At the bottom of the page simply enter your zip code and click “go” to get started. You’ll be taken to a pre-written email to your Senators, asking them to support the CHGME program.
If you’re interested in getting involved in other Child Advocacy issues we’d be happy to add you to our early notification list. Just email Heather Schmaltz Heather.Schmaltz@nationwidechildrens.org, Administrative Director of External Relations.
Please help maintain funding to train the next great generation of pediatric specialists.
