What You and Your Teen Need to Know About Male Birth Control

Dec 19, 2023

You may have heard news about advancements in birth control for males. Researchers are working on new medications and technology that stop sperm production or change the movement of sperm to prevent pregnancy. Although these new methods are being tested, they are not yet available. Currently condoms, withdrawal, and vasectomy remain the only male birth control methods.

Condoms provide both pregnancy prevention and protection against sexually transmitted infections. They are sold in stores and pharmacies, offered online, and are free from many healthcare providers. Condoms can be combined with other methods such as withdrawal or a method their partner is using.

Withdrawal, also known as “pull out,” keeps sperm away from a partner’s vagina. The pull-out method can be difficult for teens to use correctly as it requires them to recognize cues from their body, which may be new.

Vasectomy is a surgical procedure that prevents sperm from being in semen by blocking the pathway and is considered permanent birth control.

Teens are responsible for their own health and should prioritize the health of their partner as well. Today, unintended teen pregnancies are at an all-time low, due to sex education and increased access to birth control methods. Parents and trusted adults also play an important role by encouraging communication about healthy behaviors and relationships.
