Monday was a big day – we opened the doors to our second Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Center. Located in Dublin, this mecca for youth sports and athletes makes Nationwide Children’s the only pediatric hospital in the country with two facilities dedicated to sports medicine and orthopedic care. This new center joins our existing Center in Westerville. I got a chance for a behind-the scenes look at the center and a lot has changed since I participated in youth sports (beyond the polyester shorts and converse high tops). Today’s youth athletes, whether participating in recreational or team sports, are serious about their personal performance. Our center (two-stories and 25,000 square-feet) is stocked with state-of-the-art training equipment and an entire interdisciplinary team to help school-age athletes reach their full potential. The second floor houses a performance arena with a track, basketball space, dance space and workout equipment that would be the envy of any fitness center. I felt like I was at the Olympic training center! The staff includes a team of sports medicine and orthopedic physicians, athletic trainers, physical therapists, Pilates trainers and many more – all with professional and advanced certifications. Also, with playing hard can come serious injuries and this same team of experts and resources will treat the unique medical needs of athletes under the age of 21. Working in pediatrics I’ve learned that youth athletes have unique medical and developmental needs. That’s why we have one-stop medical care that includes casting rooms and radiology services. Be sure to drop me a note if you use our Sports Medicine, Orthopedics or Sports and Orthopedic Physical Therapy programs. I’d love to hear about your experiences!

The post A Mecca for Young Athletes appeared first on 700 Children's.
