Meet Miracle Mile Champion #6: Toby Holt
The Nationwide Children’s Hospital Columbus Marathon and ½ Marathon is October 21st and we’re honored to be the event’s title beneficiary. As we countdown to the Marathon we’ll introduce you to our “mile champions.” These 26 special children and teens, each with a moving story to share, will be designated a mile along the event course. They will serve as patient ambassadors – to motivate participants and engage the entire community in this vital fundraising event. Each child will have a fundraising page for their mile and many of the miles will have corporate sponsors.
This week we introduce you to Toby Holt
Hometown: Lewis Center
Condition: Spina Bifida & Hydrocephalus
Some smiles are contagious – Toby Holt has one of those smiles. He’s a little boy who continues to overcome tremendous odds. Born with Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus, Toby has had 12 surgeries since birth and has spent most of his young life at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. He sees nine different doctors at Nationwide Children’s and receives speech, physical, and occupational therapy. He breathes with the help of a ventilator while he sleeps and eats an all pureed diet, and uses a feeding tube for water and medications. Most recently Toby developed a seizure disorder but none of these physical challenges keep this busy preschooler down.
Toby’s mom Carrie tells us that this tenacious little boy has shown his family (including his two older brothers and one younger sister) what it means to have determination, courage, and perseverance. Two months ago Toby couldn’t even hold his head up after seizure wracked his tiny body for 3+ hours, and yet at therapy last week he was walking with minimal assistance in his braces and walker – He is definitely their champion (and ours too)!
Toby and his family are excited for the Marathon. Mom, Carrie, will be running the ½ marathon and Toby’s mile will be dedicated to his favorite color –green! Along Toby’s mile (exact locations will be announced in July), we are asking that all volunteers and fans sport their green in honor of Toby and every child at Nationwide Children’s who is overcoming the odds! Go Toby!
