It’s Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Week

This week we honor our community’s EMS providers; every one of them is an invaluable partner to our Emergency Services and Trauma Team here at Nationwide Children’s. Last year we treated more than 70,000 children in our ED, thousands of these children, often the most critically ill and injured, were transported to the hospital by our local EMS providers. The immediate pre-hospital care these dedicated professionals provide is a result of years of constant education and training. It’s amazing what can be done for a child before they even reach the hospital. Every second counts and these men and women make a life-saving difference every day.

Yesterday, as part of our EMS week celebrations we previewed the Emergency Trauma Center for local Emergency Services Leadership. It was exciting to show our guests the new facilities. Here are some of the highlights:

The new Emergency Department is located on the west side of campus. Family parking is immediately outside the entrance and there is a new outpatient pharmacy on-site for filling prescriptions
– The department is nearly double in size with expanded services in every capacity ranging from trauma and critical care to dental procedure and rooms just for orthopedic injuries.
– The waiting area is beautiful with an amazing circular fish tank but our goal is that you won’t spend too long here as we’ve enhanced our patient intake process and expanded fast track care services.
– We still have capacity to grow and expand. The new Department was designed so we still have the potential for future expansion
– The Emergency Department will continue to operate in its current location until the new ED opens on Wednesday, June 20.

You have the chance to see the new Emergency Department when we open the hospital for tours during Community Celebration Day on June 10th from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. Can’t wait for you to see it!
